On Wednesday morning I got started organizing the seedlings to go out to the cold frame. The cold nights were done for a while and I needed to get them out of the windows. The coming heat would be awful inside if I couldn’t pull the shades.
Six of the trays filled the first cold frame. Of the 2 pots of rose cuttings, all but 1 had died. It’s in the bucket. Behind it is a volunteer feverfew. My helper friend had been given a hydroponic cuttings starter and he has started more of his grandmother’s white rose cuttings in that. Hopefully at least one of all these will take!
Five more trays went into the 2nd cold frame. We were able to remove all the shelves from the roundtop window so at least I’d be able to pull that shade. I had all the remaining seedlings in the dining room window or on the back porch.
My general helper, foreground, and cleaning helper (in back) were both here and once we’d finished with moving and watering all the seedlings, we headed to the Big garden to start laying it out.
We stopped before we got very far because I decided it would be easier to put the amendment down before the strings went up. So we got that done next. Then we laid out the rows.
Once that was done we put up the pea fences. We got pretty good at it, as they were straight and as tight as possible. My cleaning helper started loosening the soil with the broadfork and the general helper went behind and smoothed the row with a handfork.
Then my general helper and I planted the snow peas and green peas while my cleaning helper broadforked the parsnip, beet, and kale rows. When we finished that and cleaned up, it was time for them to go.
I got a shower and was looking forward to a nap when my husband’s best friend’s brother pulled in. I’d forgotten he was coming to get the mowers ready for the season. So I got changed and went up with him to do that. We got back to the house around 5PM and he wanted to finish trying to get the little generator running properly. While he was doing that, I ordered supper for us, to be delivered.
He was pretty happy that he was able to accomplish all 3 things without anything going wrong. We sat and visited and ate our meals. He left about 7PM and I got ready and went to bed. Much too long a day for me!
