I have great stockpiles of violets all around the yard. The edges of the walkways have always been lined with violets and thyme. I needed to get the big mass of violets out of the Big garden, so that meant making 2 new gardens along the walkway.
This one on the west side had lots of tiny bulbs and a few volunteer alyssum. White alyssum was one of my husband’s favorites.
I dug up lots of creeping thyme from the lawn and put it in the front edge mostly. Then I put the violets in. There’s alyssum in the center and that will fill in for this year.
On the east side this was before I weeded.
This is a narrow one so I didn’t have as much space to get violets in. I brought a load of loam around and filled in the holes in the lawn.
I ran them down and as near to the downspout as I could to try to stop the erosion.
The next place was the 2 fence lengths of violet bed next to the driveway. It had taken an awful beating during the construction but there were still violets in it, if I got it weeded.
By noontime I finished weeding the lengths.
The 2nd fence length’s violets were hard hit. But I have no shortage of big violets to move into this bed, perhaps on Friday.
Friday is the last seed starting. My intern will be here for that. I have no idea how big it is, but if we have time, I hope to move violets into the fence bed.
