On Sunday I decided to do a garden update. It had been below 0F when I got up and might make it into the 20’sF during the day. This is what the middle pasture looked like as the sun came up after the storm on Saturday.
This is the Small garden. On the right is the Anne raspberry bed. On the left you can just see the Candystripe mountain laurel. The compost bins are at the back of the garden.
On the other side of the swingset is the Big garden. By the gate is the Big quince. In the back on the right, there’s the Lacinato kale. It had been doing fine up until this deep cold. The tips of the stakes in the center mark the rows of garlic planted in October. There’s also comfrey, horehound, rhubarb, and horseradish under the snow.
By the Big garden gate and the back porch, the azalea has snow caps on leaf buds.
I took all these through the windows, as it’s too cold for my lungs right now. The lower part of this photo has blurry frost designs. This one shows the fence gardens lining the driveway. There’s 3 forsythia and a lilac along it.
More frost designs highlighted by the sun coming up outline this shot of the New Herb garden and part of the windflower area.
I took this one of the New Herb garden from the living room window. It shows all of the wildflower area too.
This is the South garden and West of Steps garden.
This shows the New West garden with a snapdragon along the foundation wall.
Another taken from the living room shows the South Herb garden. There’s sage just above the railing, and I’m not sure what behind it. It might be weeds…
I got this shot from an upstairs window of the Little trees. Knock wood, the deer haven’t gotten them…
This is the little maple tree near the house.
Most of my gardening is done inside, with the 75+ house plants I have. It’s been hard this month just to keep them watered. But soon my helpers will be back, when I am better, and we will try to get them all fed. They will be much happier.
