Monday morning we had a very dramatic sunrise. It was pretty mild out for November 1. How did it get to be November 1 already?? I hadn’t gotten my garlic planted in early October, or October at all. I think this is the latest I’ve ever planted it.
I finally got out to the gardens around 10AM. I started collecting all the stuff I thought I might need. One of these was compost, just to get it out of the driveway for plowing this winter. It was covered in weeds, so I weeded that first.
Next I took stakes and according to the garden plan, figured out where the rows would be. It looked like parsley and hollyhocks were already there. I also had to move all the mulch hay.
I ran the strings and sure enough, they were in the way. I had planned 2½ rows of garlic. It would now be 3, with interruptions amounting to 13’. I also staked out the hollyhocks and noted on the map how much room they would take up.
Then I set about weeding, after taking the string down. I got most, but not all of the area between plants on the left and right, and hay bales, weeded. I finished about 1 PM.
On Tuesday after shopping, etc. I plan to get out there about noon and get the mulch off, amend it and put the compost down, then run the strings again.
It will be already for planting on Wednesday. I also have to find time to check the markers for the planting, and break up the bulbs of garlic and select the best cloves.
Another busy day…
