One of the odd things about where I live is that we often get far better SUNRISES in the WEST and better SUNSETS in the EAST skies. That was the case on Sunday morning.
I spent the morning cleaning up the kitchen and filing the seed packets from 2022 that had been dumped on my desk. I got both the new desk and the old desk cleaned off too. On the new desk I filed the receipts going back to November. So I am slowly making progress in the office.
I didn’t remember the camera in the excitement in the afternoon so I went looking for photos of the truck. I found this one titled “truck back home” and even if it shows green grass and is pretty old, I thought it was appropriate. I found photos of when we bought this truck and it was 12 years ago! Time flies…
Anyways, Tom had shown up in the truck to take another pass at the driveway and deliver milk/cream. Then he headed out and 20 minutes later I get a call.
He said, “We might have a problem…”
I said, “Oh, Oh, what happened?”
He said , “It stuttered and just stopped…”
I said, “Where are you?”
He says, “150 feet from the bridge…”
He’d not made it a mile from the house and the truck had died. So he thought maybe it was out of gas and the battery was wearing down from starting it. So I went out to the wood shed and got the full gas can and hopped in the car and went to the rescue.
This was mid afternoon and I had no business driving, but must needs and it was less than a mile…
Well, they make gas cans these days so they are nearly impossible to use. This one at least, the nozzle would go into the fuel opening, but it didn’t have a vent on it and the gas wouldn’t flow. So Tom put a small hole in the top of it and we got the gas in the tank, reserving a little in case we had to prime it.
We tried to turn it over but it wouldn’t start and the battery was low. So we got the Subaru nose to plow and the cables just reached. I had to rev the engine on the Subaru but it still wouldn’t start. It was taking a while for the gas to get to the carburetor.
I thought maybe the getting in and out of the truck/car has been enough to loosen the cables on terminals. So Tom wiggled them while I turned the truck over and it started right up.
I kept it running while he packed up all the stuff and we switched places and he drove the truck home with me following. I didn’t manage to hit anyone or thing nor get the car stuck in the driveway, so I won!
The gas gauge on the truck doesn’t work, and one must remember to fill it every so often…
Last summer we’d replaced the battery in the truck and had a heck of a time getting it out due to this lock. As you can see the bolt head is rounded off. Well, that had gone on the list, but not the top and had never been replaced.
So Tom and I wrangled with it and we finally got it out so we could charge the battery. I loaded all Tom’s stuff into the Subaru as he had to get home and I didn’t need the car.
Once back in the house I sat down for a while and my brother returned from his trip. He had brought a lot of goodies.
There was saffron, cloves, lots of forms of vanilla: beans, powder, paste, extract, and 3 things he’d forgotten the name of but that smelled wonderful. The curled bark is NOT cinnamon he said and doesn’t smell like it. The green stalks have a peppery smell. He will inquire and let me know what the 3 items are. Then I will vacuum seal them in jars like the rest.
On Monday I go in the morning to the Smith College Bulb Show with my friend. I also have laundry to do, starting chart work to finish, and end of year to sort and put away.
