My helper was here on Wednesday afternoon and we got the little trees’ “winter coats” off and put away. It’s really amazing to me how much these trees grew in 1 year.
These trees were ordered from Fedco Trees. They were planted on April 17th, 2020. Most of the 2020 photos were taken in May.
#1. The North Star cherry: this was a substitution but has done ok so far. The cherries and the peach were the longest of the little trees, I think one was 4½’ long, the rest a foot shorter. The elderberries, Juneberry, and serviceberry were 18” – 24” long when planted.
#2. One of the 2 York elderberries. These did the best by far of all the little trees. And this one was by far the best of the two. It’s easily 6’+ in diameter and 7’ high.
#3. One of 2 Goodbarn elderberries. Of the elderberries, these 2 did the poorest. They were pretty small and have few branches.
#4. The Allegheny serviceberry did the poorest of all the trees. I don’t think it grew at all.
#5. One of the 2 Adams elderberries. These did pretty well, reaching 6’ in diameter and about that in height.
#6. Lapins cherry. This got the tallest of all the trees. I discovered the pruner guy had lopped 3’ off the top of it last month. I hope it does ok, with such a chop.
#7. The other Adams elderberry. You can see it’s not as big as the other one, but it did ok.
#8. The other Goodbarn elderberry. You can see it only has a few branches and is very low to the ground.
#9. The Contender peach tree did pretty well. It’s still leaning, so we will have to give it support this year.
#10. The 2nd York elderberry is pretty large, but not as big as the first one. Amazing that little chopped off stick could grow into this in a year.
#11. The Juneberry doubled in size, but is still pretty small compared to the others.
#12. The sugar maple hasn’t grown at all. I hope it’s been busy developing a root system.
The little forsythias were planted and not watered last year. I couldn’t get a hose to them. But they are all flowering this year.
Hopefully they will grow some this year.
These 2 are between the old forsythias. The other 3 were out in the open, on their own. They all are meant to make a hedge to screen the “mountain” behind them.
On Thursday I finished up both shed gardens. On Friday I plan to start the Old North garden as it needs a lot of bulbs.
