It was another real cold morning and I stayed inside until it warmed up. I got some photos of the flowering house plants. This is the 3rd of the clivias to flower.
The Christmas cactus continues to bloom, covered with flowers and buds.
The pathetic poinsettia really likes its west window and is coming back very nicely. It’s grown a lot of new red bracts.
I finally got outside just before 11AM and decided that I should plant as many of the plants as I could before adding any more bulbs.
Most of the plants in the Big garden were just starting to show green. The exception was the white iris. It had stayed green all winter.
I planted 2 sets of each plant. The ones on the right are species geranium. The one on the left was a surprise. I was so sure my prized goldy chrysanthemum had died last year. But when I looked closely today, there were tiny little green leaves at the base. So it’s not very attractive right now (most of the plants weren’t) but I hope it will be a blaze of golden glory come September.
I also planted the one verbascum I found. But in digging it up, I managed to chop off several of its huge roots. No idea if it will recover or not.
Remember the Chiondoxa lucillae I found yesterday? Well, there they are. Also in the 2 pots were more bluebells, so I planted 2 clumps of them also.
The giant allium hadn’t done well last year, its second year in a pot. It turns out they were severely potbound, so bad I could not separate them. So I planted them as they were, 2 pots worth in 2 places.
The area around the back porch was where most of the stone working was done. It was left an awful mess. I asked the carpenter to disassemble the bench made to hold the wet saw and move the sawhorses out of the way. I plan to rake up this mess tomorrow and my intern and I will be digging and planting this garden. It’s to have daffodils and morning glories climbing up it.
I had to go out into the back of the house 2 days ago and noticed an Iris reticulate in bloom. Today when I went to get a photo, I found 2 Chiondoxas in bud next to it.
Iris reticulatas are tiny iris about 5” high that bloom in early spring. When we had the wood stove going in the cellar all winter, years ago, some I had on the south side of the house would bloom in January. They were right next to the foundation.
Looking a little farther down this East Shed garden, I saw the tiny snow crocus had bloomed. These were the only flowers I saw besides snowdrops.
On Wednesday I hope to get to the sewing room, but I’ve been pretty tired from long days in the gardens. My intern will be here and it will be more garden work for us.
