I put the rain gauge out on Friday afternoon just before the rain started. From then until Monday morning we got 4” of rain. Most of it was gentle soaking rain that went on and on.
The sun finally came out around 9AM on Monday and I was out in the Big garden planting by 10AM. I got the broccoli and kale in and mulched.
I have to move the mulch to put the amendment down. But in this middle section, I was also going to have to fill the holes from moving plants.
Planting is a lot easier if all the loose mulch is raked up. I didn’t want it mixed into the loam we’d use to fill the holes. So I raked it into piles on the sides.
My helper friend was coming around 2PM to help me do the loam moving. He brought in the wheelbarrow loads and I spread it, tamped it, and then put down the biochar compost.
This middle section had had all the plants and they’d been there 2 years. When they were dug, it left some big holes. We had just about finished when the wheelbarrow’s old tire burst a big bubble and went flat.
The remaining holes weren’t bad, so we decided to put the amendment down and spread the loose mulch wherever there weren’t going to be rows. Most of this section is for tomatoes, peppers, and sprawly things like squash or cukes.
On Tuesday my helper will be here at 8AM and we will layout this area and plant as much as we can. We also have to haul all the seedlings out of the house and dig out the cold frame covers for the 2nd cold frame. I won’t be able to plant most of this area until the end of the week or the weekend, as the plants need to harden off. If we finish early, we’ll start prepping the back area.
