On Saturday morning it was just as humid as it’s been, so I got outside at 7AM to clean out the trash shed for a dump run. I finished at 7:30, got the truck loaded and brought around for a trip out at 9AM.
I was pretty wet from sweat already and decided that trying to do gardens in the humidity wasn’t smart, as I had to make a trip to the local animal shelter at 12:30 and wanted to be in some kind of shape for it.
So after a shower, I cleaned off my desk while I waited for my brother to get up. Once we’d made the dump run, he went up to see what had broken on the weedwacker during the week.
I spent the next couple hours hunting for the manual. It has a dark cover unlike most manuals that are white. It had been left in the box of parts, fallen down and gotten stuff on top of it. Once I had that I could order the broken part, after checking there were none locally.
I had some lunch and waited impatiently after closing the house up because of impending thunderstorms in the afternoon. My neighbor arrived at 12:30 and we headed out.
Once we were signed in at the animal shelter, they showed us walls with posters and descriptions of what adult cats were available. Above is one of 2 photos side by side on the first wall. I was taken by these 2 male cats, aged 8 years, 1 month each. After checking all the posters and asking about any other adult cats, I decided to check out these 2 elderly gentlemen.
They were right at the limit I’d set for older cats. I’d been looking for ones from 3 years to 5 years. There were some but they just didn’t appeal.
We were shown to a private room they shared. They had been brought in on Friday night, as their owner had died. They had been adopted from this shelter at 2 months old and that was all they knew about them. This is Larry and the first photo is his brother Logan.
Logan had long hair and was very prettily colored, bright orange and white. By Logan was pretty traumatized by his situation and was hiding in a dark corner, not wanting to engage at all.
Larry on the other hand was out in the open and when he discovered I’d pat him, he became my best friend. Check out my pants below the knees. He’d rub against me and follow me wherever I went. He even tried to follow me out the door so closely the automatic door nearly caught his neck.
I had managed to remember to bring a carrier but forgot my camera, so my neighbor got these shots.
I was really torn about separating the 2 brothers. But the half price sale for the two was $300 and I just couldn’t afford it. Plus I really can’t care for a long haired cat, the mats need to be dealt with promptly. And I already had one standoffish cat, Dennis at the barn.
So in the end, I just adopted Larry. He had to stay until next week, as they had just come in and hadn’t had a vet check yet. That would happen on Tuesday, particularly attention to teeth.
I hated to leave him there as he so wanted to come with me, but it will give Logan time to adjust with his brother still there.
The threatened thunderstorms never came though we saw spectacular clouds to the north as we headed home.
When we got home there was a car in the driveway to the barn. It turns out it was the BMW Tom has been resurrecting after a fire. He’s been working on it for many months and had finally got it running. It got registered on Friday (after 2 trips to the Registry, of course) and it passed inspection Saturday morning. It was legal!
He and his daughter had come out in the awful heat and humidity to do some more of the pasture garden sod stripping. Between the sweat and the dirt, he was pretty much of a mess.
The puppy came too and found a shady spot. But I was told she ate her share of grubs again.
Some of these photos are Tom’s (as were the ones on the other pasture garden post) and some are ones I got.
They finished the strip we started first.
Then they decided to start one on the other side of the garden, to give a visual of what was to be done. They also decided putting the tractor on the dirt that had been worked was easier than driving on the grass and packing down the cut sods.
Lots of clouds but no rain.
So this is as far as they got. It was far too hot for me out there so I didn’t help. Probably be no more done on it this week as I have harvests, inventory of freezers and root cellar, and the New Herb garden to get planted. Tom is off to a business conference for the week, unless the tardy grandchild is born soon.
My brother and I had planned a stirfry supper so I went out and harvested all the squash and cukes that were ready and some ingredients we needed.
On Sunday we’re to have thunderstorms starting at 2AM so I closed the house up. I hope to get laundry done, do some paperwork, get odds and ends done inside. My brother will be installing the drying rack for the garlic in the woodshed alcove. He also hopes to repair the latch on the entry door at the barn.
