On Friday I was up at 5:30AM and working on my post. I stopped to pull up the shades and went back to finish it. I heard a crash at the other end of the house. I often hear crashes, but for some reason, don’t seem to find the source.
I went out and noticed I’d forgotten to put the plants in the dining room window. As I went around the table to do it, I saw the source. Some cat had decided to try to get on the plant shelf and managed to knock the fairy on the floor, shattering her. He’d also managed to pull one of the support ropes to the shelf out of the wall. Sigh…
So I set about fixing the shelf, and I managed to get the first piece gorilla glued on the leg. I will have to wait 24 hours between pieces to make sure they are set. It’s going to take a while to fix her.
So the plan was my helper friend was going to pick up a seasoning mix for me on his way down. For an unknown reason, he thought he could get his little 2 wheel drive truck (I call them Tonka trucks) through the unplowed end of my road. He made it about 900’ in and was good and stuck. AAA wouldn’t come because the road is unplowed.
He called me and asked for a shovel. So I brought him 2. That was my first driving trip out and I wasn’t in any kind of shape to be driving, but it was only 4 miles and I didn’t kill anyone.
Two hours later, while I was trying to make headway on my garden bed notes, he called and was still stuck but had made it one third of the way out. But he was cold and wet, so I went out again, didn’t kill anyone and got him. He drove back to my house.
I parked him in front of the wood stove to warm up and dry out. He called his wife and she brought him stuff he’d need to go out and keep digging. She took him back to the area and went home.
Meanwhile the culprit slept and I worked for a while longer on the notes then quit to read for a while.
Around 3PM my helper friend came into the room. He’d dug himself close enough to the road that someone saw him and pulled him out. He brought the shovels back, took one of the bags of bird seed to the garden shed and said he’d do the other on Tuesday when he came.
I sat down again and the next thing I know my contractor is bringing in firewood to the office! Apparently my son had conned him into it. Sigh…
He was actually here to get the washer out of the kitchen and into the cellar. I’d told him about the other 2 events of the day and warned things come in 3’s…
So in addition to the dolly being double checked as secure, he tied ropes around the handrails and I payed them out as he went down the cellar stairs. It was a non- event. Whew!
When I had done the floor in the kitchen last Saturday I found the kickboards under the cabinets were really loose. The old carpenter had put them on with glue and it had let go over the last couple years.
So the contractor had a pin nailer and he got them all on securely. He had also taken one of my fireplace tools that had broken, again, and was going to fix it once and for all. He had brought it back better than new!
I was pretty exhausted from all the events of the day, so I ordered out Chinese for supper and read until bedtime.
On Saturday I have the orchid show and my surrogate granddaughter and mom might come to visit. The child has had a cold this week, so we are waiting to see how she is when she gets up.
The warming spell has arrived, 40’s in the days, 20’s in the nights, good sugaring weather for the maple syrup people, maybe including Tom. It will last through next Saturday they say. We’ll see…
