Last week I did something really dumb. I was backing up my truck and ran over the trailer hitch on my utility trailer, breaking the locking mechanism of the hitch, so I had to add another thing to my list of chores.
I chose to cut off the front of the hitch instead of cutting off the weld. It was easier and I do not have access to a welder. It also allowed me to install the new hitch on top of the remains of old hitch without needing shims on the insides of the new hitch to secure a tight fit.
Next I drilled holes in rail to match the holes in the hitch and added two grade 5 bolts and the trailer is back in working order.
This was a simple fix, but it is just another example of why someone that has a homestead needs to be able to do their own repairs.
