I took this video the day before yesterday of Freckle, and this morning when I arrived for my morning feeding and cuddles I found my little friend Freckle dead. When I looked down I knew. She looked so peaceful, not a scratch on her.
I buried her then spent a bunch of time trying to figure out why she died. I worried it had gotten to cold, even though my mom has them in Montana with no problems. And scoured the internet for an answers, so I can protect the others. Nothing really came up, there is so little about quail on the internet. Everything I had already read and was careful about. I clean the cage every week, fresh water, observe them to see if they are sick, They have always been healthy and strong. It seemed it was a mystery.
Sometimes these things just happen, its part of having livestock. It is something you deal with on a farm, no matter how small. It is very sad when it happens.
The coop seems quite today, the birds miss their friend. The Quail Mother misses her too.
Rumi the wonderful 13th century poet says "Don’t grieve. Anything you lose comes round in another form."
I am glad to have had the time I did with her. She had a personality that stood out from the rest. The only one that would loudly chirp and strut around. She was the bravest. Always the first to check out anything, first to go out in the run. She was the first to eat out of my hand and to show my how personable these birds can really be. She helped start my writing about them. I am so grateful to her.
To celebrate her life, here are some photographs of her, starting from her first days on the homestead.
First day in their new home. I brought the first batch of quail, the ones that started it all the night before :)
Here she is first day. This was my thumbnail of my first post that did well on steemit :)
Freckle hanging out with me while I paint.
The day Miss Piggy arrived.
Lover of mealworms.
This video was 2 days ago, she lived a happy life. I was taking video of her to make a quailmother gif :)
Big Love.
