Homesteading With Michael David Part 6
Why Are You Homesteading?
Ok you found a spot to homestead that fits you somehow. Now what?
Well don't go run out and buy it right away. Ask yourself why you're doing it first.
Nearly any trend you see today links back to a keyword somewhere. As keywords it makes the idea, concept, or whatever, hyped up a lot. People put on their best shirt and get in front of the camera to show you how you can do essentially anything.
When I started a mini homestead it made sense, well... at least a little.
I grew up farming and doing most things by hand. I'm certain dad wanted to be Amish. I actually did go to an Amish daycare for a while so I'm likely not far off.
So farming for our own needs was pretty normal to me. Even during times I did not garden, growing up like that it was always in me.
I started the homestead here essentially to help my daughter. It was quick and cheap and served a purpose... barely.
There is a sense of solitude in homesteading. When you're homesteading you're at home, a lot. You good with that?
Well, if you're going into homesteading as a trend or whatever, you're likely going in with some money in hand. If you've got enough money for a bunch of the latest and greatest then you'll have all the time in the world.
The point is that you have to know you. What is your real reason for wanting to homestead a property?
Does it just look fun? Then bring lots of money.
Do you have to for some reason the kids will never understand? then bring extra layers of skin.
A forgotten side of homesteading or even off grid living is the poor. They don't have the following in a lot of cases yet being poor through most of our history was synonymous with homesteading.
When you're poor, and you also know what's what, then you've likely been taught how to survive when shit gets real real. You'll need those survival skills homesteading in the middle of nowhere.
Remember, or figure out, who you are. Then ask why you want this.
Pay even a little bit of attention to my story, and you'll understand that shit can get rough in ways you don't currently think is possible.
That's definitely not to say I've had it rougher than anyone else, it's only to state that change can come quick, and the more you know yourself the better off you'll be.
So if you're thinking of homesteading, we've covered 2 steps.
- Pick a spot that fits you.
- While pondering this spot decide what you really want from this experience.
