Chickens are a fantastic source of eggs...... and MEAT!
I used to want a butchering block SO bad!
I thought it would be pretty easy; you put the chicken's head over the block, (or stump, or whatever), and whack! off the head comes!
Unfortunately, there were no stumps or butchering blocks to be found...
I had read up on the 'Hopper Popper' a cervical dislocation device, but that was too expensive for such a simple thing.
Well, my husband has a friend who welds!
Introducing, the Flapper Decapper!!
Basically two pieces of iron welded into an angle, screwed to the side of my shed. (Painted with engine enamel, because my husband works in a parts store, haha.)
I just slide the chicken's head into the angle, and with a quick YANK off comes the head. It just pulls right off.
I then hold the chicken over a bucket to bleed out and continue with cleaning it.
Butchering is still one of my least favorite tasks, but this device makes it easier for me.
