Howdy Steemians!
This afternoon I decided that since I saw a few more shoots starting to come up from the shoot roots from my cane plants, that I would harvest the oldest one. Now, I certainly could've let it grow to be double the size, but figured "why not?"
Here is the cane before harvest (in going to take the older, middle red one)
I'm using pruners and gloves (the cane actually has hairlike spines on the outer blades)
Go ahead and cut off your shoot, leave a little left at the bottom and don't cut too close to the roots
Where the shoot used to be
You can begin "husking" the outer "shell" of the shoot and discard (compost!)
I cut the cane into sections, leaving at least one of what are known as "nodes" and "buds" on each cutting. Some of my cuttings look good for future propagation, because they already have buds and/or roots beginning. Those ones I put to the left and will plant those within 6 hours. The ones on the right didn't look good to propagate, so I'll be eating those!
I put the cuttings I'm going to plant in water, to sort of preserve them whilst I eat the others (priorities!)
Now, take a peeler and peel off the sides of the cutting(s) you are going to eat
Go ahead and cut them in half, stick them in your mouth, chew and suck the cane juice right out. Seriously can't describe how delicious it is!
Last step is to spit out the fiber and repeat!
I hope this post has been educational and appetizing!
Thanks for stopping by Steemians!
