10th Post about the Container Garden and it's a good one for planting!
As the first of May dawned this morning, I realised I still hadn't planted any potatoes. Everything seems to be late this year! So I went to the Garden Centre and purchased 6 Red Skinned Potatoes for 99p but I can't recall there name something like Sereen.
I used 1 and a half bags of organic compost and filled the planters around 1/2 full. Then planted the chitted potatoes, only 3 as they are small but long containers. I then covered them.
I will add more compost as the potato shoots show through as this encourages more potatoes to grow.
I didn't riddle the compost with the potatoes as I tent to find they grow OK is loosely forked compost rather than every lump removed like for the carrots.
Move on down for the Tomato
I saw a really interesting post by here about using Upside Tomato Planters, this had never occured to me before. Seeing as last year my Tomato Greenhouses ended up blown across town this option could be viable to hang them over the railings roadside and they have the wall to bash against, but they wont blow away. It will also make a lovely feature on the wall next to the hanging baskets.
So I started off one Grushkova Tomato Seed, another non GM Seed from the Real Seed company, the same I attempted to grow last year.
I have made a DIY Cloche out of the top of the bottle of coke to act as a mini greenhouse as my current one is being used by the 3 Peppers Plants, which are also doing well.
The Good News
After what feels like an eternal wait I have finally reached top of the waiting list for an allotment!!!
Allotment number 32 will hopefully be shared by myself and my friend very soon. I am looking forward to this as although it is a lot of extra work I will be able to grow varieties that I am unable too in my Container like Pumpkins (non Vine of course), Beans, Vine Squash, potentially tomatoes too depending on how they go.
The allotments are a short 5 minute walk from my house which is brilliant too. They have no electric so all the work will be manual. However upon a quick gaze at the potential patch from over the wall it appears to be covered in black liner. So maybe some of the hard work will already be done - If I was looking at the right allotment atleast!
