On August 17, 2023, we had our first formal discussion. That day I got to know what the course is really all about. I now get a glimpse that we would dive deep into business analytics or data science. As a BS in Information Systems student, we did not really get to dive deep yet into data analytics, only the structure of organizations and developing systems.
Generally, in my own terms, business intelligence is about making business transactions and decisions way easier and less hassle by analyzing raw data and converting it to valuable insights. Aided by technology and automation, business analytics is now used to obtain reports, and consequently make informed business decisions, with just a few clicks, saving time, costs, and effort, and optimizing business revenues and productivity. Furthermore, with today’s state of advanced technology, businesses can now forecast future outcomes, paving the way for companies to plan their future and get a competitive advantage.
As an introductory class, we got to know the specific terms to remember like data science, business analytics, and big data. I have learned that due to the vast emergence and significance of data analytics, the program BS in Data Science was put up. With that, we got to know more about the overlapping disciplines like Computer Science, Math and Statistics, Machine Learning, Research, and Software we will get to deal with in this course. There was also a brief showcase of business analytics’ history and how businesses have vastly progressed with its use and technology advancement. At its core, business analytics is data driven and it is through all these data, converted into valuable insights through statistics, aided and optimized by technology that these businesses get to make abreast decisions that improve their company and even get them the competitive advantage.
Leaning a bit more into introductory statistics, we got a refresher on how to handle raw data particularly, sorting and filtering as well as commonly used formulas, categorized as same-row and multi-row formulas. These formulas help to expand more the data set for easier analysis.
