Disclaimer:Smoking is Injurious to Health
Pipe smoking , a very traditional way of smoking is very quite popular even today in many region and among many old folks. A long pipe attached to a stand, filled with amber, with hot water making a splash sound while inhaling is all about Pipe Smoking.
On a recent visit a friend home, I was amazed to find some old folks sitting on cot and making a circle and inhaling the Hukkah The so called Pipe Smoking. The pipe is of great length and easily making moves amobg the circle. Each one of them inhales one by one and pass it on to other. They were quite peacefully enjoying the noon alongwith some interesting chit-chat. A single Hukah was shared by 12 people sitting in a round. My friend told me that such hukkah is important when they have family meeting and all the relatives elder sits together to keep the unity intact.
Whatever going on there, i was not concerned at all, my focus was on the "Hukkah" as I found it quite beautiful and interesting subject for steemit. The mud flask on the top was nicely decorated which contains small pieces of amber to keep the smoke hot.
A chain and small clipper is attached on it , to moce the amber when getting cold. It is meant to keep the things hot. For a second i was thinking the use of it however my friend help me to clarify it.
The base of the Hukkah was made up of pure bronze and contains water. When you suck the smoke, it makes a gargle sound. People sitting there using the long pipe to hold on by curling the palm and making the gargle sound and exhaling out the smoke from the mouth.
The set up reminds me of traditional India, where people use to set up for the meeting and keep each other accompany through hukkah. Even today, there are many hukkah bar opened in many countries and clubs, who emphaises on hukkah/ pipe smoking. The old tradition is slowly taking over the new generation. However the new ones are more glamorous whereas the age old tradition of smoking is simple and quite beautiful.
The age old tradition are still alive in many old people, who still loves to sit in open and share the hukkah rather than visiting any closed bars to enjoy pipe smoke. Love to see the togetherness that a hukkah brings upon between so many people.
