Our day three at Iceland began with a filling breakfast at Country Hotel Katla. We again started our journey at 9 AM. The highlight for the day was Jökulsárlón glacier, but the weather was not helping. It was very cloudy and drizzling, please find the map of our travel for the day below:
When we started off, it was pitch dark and my wife was saying "where have you brought me for our honeymoon, yes I had told you that it would be great if the place was secluded but this is a deserted land with eerie landscape, unpredictable weather and an un-earthly feel", I didn't have the heart to contradict her........I just held her hand on top of the gear knob and told her "at least we are experiencing it together". To this she held my hand and leaned over my shoulder as I cruised towards Jökulsárlón. After about an hour the sunlight started to creep out of the clouds and we could see the snow covered mountains at a distance.
As I had mentioned in earlier posts my wife was navigating through the journey using google map, we were at a cross road and my navigator asked me to take the 2nd exit, which I did. We started to climb a mountainous road, which is not uncommon in Iceland but this was eerily deserted and foggy, the roads in Iceland are not crowded but you get to see cars passing by every now and then, but this road was dead empty. I stopped the car on the side of the road to check the map myself and it seems my navigator had advised to take the wrong exit, and now we had to make a turn back on this narrow cloudy uphill road, my wife got down with torch in her hand to flash across for approaching car, after may iteration of backward and forward movement managed to turn the face of the car around and we were back on our way. After a drive of 45mins more we reached Jökulsárlón, see our red beast parked below:
and trust me friends if there is heaven on this earth, it is here. Let me stop blabberling and let the photo do the talking:
With a heavy heart we started our journey back. The common trait in roads of Iceland is the courtesy of the drivers. People respect others driving, wait for the person coming from the opposite end on a one way bridge, this is the only reason though traffic laws are not heavily imposed, we didn't come across a single road accidents. At around 3 PM we entered the town of Vik and headed towards the beach. The beach was entirely deserted, only one other couple other than us. It was cloudy with chilly wind blowing and rain drops that stings your skin,
As it was raining pretty badly, didnt want to risk my camera any more, please find below some more pictures from the phone camera, though the quality is not good you will get a idea of the atmosphere.
Though the the weather was bad but I wanted to cover reifsenjara beach, we had to cover twisty uphill then down hill cloudy road to reach there.
A photos from my phone that sums up our day:
