You could say the Pacific Rim was not the most successful hit expected by the creator, the auteur Guillermo Del Toro. His revenue at the box office was not so brilliant, critics and audience response was not too great. But who liked the movie, became a fan of militants. This then catapulted the sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising became one of the quite awaited movie next year. Its IMAX trailer has just been released and you can see it below.
Taking time 10 years after the first film, Pacific Rim Uprising will focus on the character of Jake Pentecost (John Boyega), the son of his late Pentecost Stacker Idris Elba who will of course navigate the giant robot Jaeger to fight the gigantic Kaiju monster that invaded the earth. Scott Eastwood will play as Lambert, Cailee Spaeny as Amara, and Rinko Kikuchi back as Mako.
****Here's the official synopsis:****
John Boyega acts as the rebel Jake Pentecost, a talented Jaeger pilot who has a legendary father who sacrifices himself for the sake of human victory against the "Kaiju" monster. Since then, Jake has ignored his training and then entered the underground criminal world. But when an unstoppable threat escapes to ravage our city and conquer the world, he is given the opportunity to pass on his father's inheritance through his distant sister, Mako Mori-who leads the great new generation of brave pilots in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for those who have fallen, their only hope is to unite in the global rebellion against the forces of destruction.
Jake is accompanied by talented pilot rival Lambert and the 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara, while the PPDC heroes are the only family he has. Rising to become the most powerful defense team ever on earth, they will be undergoing spectacular new adventures on a remarkable scale.
I have to admit that I really like Pacific Rim which is an over-the-top love letter from Del Toro against anime and mecha culture. Unfortunately, Del Toro is no longer sitting in the director's chair, but replaced by Steven S. DeKnight is known as the showrunner series Spartacus and Daredevil.
If judged by the trailer, the film does not seem to have a visual aesthetic lvl Del Toro, rather it looks more like a hybrid between Transformers and Power Rangers. The special effects are good, but seem generic. May I be mistaken.
This IMAX trailer became a sort of summary of an action sequence in which several Jaegers fought a gang against a newly transformed Kaiju. The size of the Kaiju is so great that Jaeger our hero looks very overwhelmed. At first glance, there is also Jaeger Boyega who is fighting one other Jaeger on the ice plains.
