When one talks about India, some talk about colors, culture, kamasutra , chicken tikka ( which also is a British take on traditional Indian dishes),population, Bollywood and sometimes about manufacturing and technology. Quite a contrast, isn't it? From a traditional society to a thriving economy which has a large manufacturing sector of automobile parts and pharmaceuticals ( India is also called the pharmacy of the world because it is a major manufacturing sector of biologics, vaccines, pharmaceuticals and medical devices).
Unfortunately despite the progress India has undergone from becoming a sovereign, democratic, secular republic in 1947, it has a rising and ugly right wing which wants to make India into a conservative and traditional monocultural society. This successfully undoes everything that has been achieved in the last 62 years. Why one may ask? Because the Indian economy and society is a direct beneficiary of a liberal, privatized and global economy! Or the LPG policy as it is fondly called. The LPG policy also has a significant name because it is very important in Indian households even today as they LPG (Liquified petroleum gas) cylinders are widely used to cook as opposed to electric stoves that are used in a lot of other countries.
The 1990's was a game changer for the Indian economy. This is because LPG policy was introduced in 1991. This policy was introduced by then finance minister Manmohan Singh ( incorrectly known as the silent prime minister by screaming vultures of politics).
The LPG policy changed the Indian markets and made the GDP increase as well. Before this policy the Indian market was restrictive, stagnant and isolated. This policy was a key in opening the Indian markets and increasing the foreign direct investment. This was what India an economic superpower ( a word Mr.56 and his followers use and abuse at every waking moment).
I am born in the mid 1990's. I have enjoyed all the benefits of a global Indian market all my life, I can stay in a metropolitan Indian city, work in a global company and enjoy products from all over the world. In contrast to this my parents who are born in the 1960's lived in a very different India, full of economic restrictions and other problems. My father tells me about his childhood and 20's in the 70's and 80's. If he wanted a car he had very limited options and he would have to book it and wait for a 5 years to a decade. I on the other hand will have a wide variety of choices for the same and will get it in a few weeks. This is the impact of a free and open markets.
Despite all these wonderful benefits of the open and free economy, new age Indian's believe and vote for global isolation, fascism and cow urine as cancer treatments ( remember when I told you India was the pharmacy of the world, think again). They are frustrated, vile and self destructive. For them fake forwards on social media are considered as proof for global isolation, xenophobia and also grounds for lynching a man to death.
This behavior has lead to economic disasters and bad policies in the past decade and it seems that we will not stop until we go back to the primitive age or worse a dictatorship with a traditional caste system. As I write this, each piece of my heart breaks. I am India today, I want an open and global market, I want freedom, I want democracy and I want to live in the sovereign, secular democracy that is written in the first page of my constitution. However it seems the other India today wants more lynching, hate, economic disasters and will keep pressing the chest thumping button. Maybe they will live and learn? The scary question is, what makes one live and learn...

दुर्भाग्य से 1947 में एक संप्रभु, लोकतांत्रिक, धर्मनिरपेक्ष गणराज्य बनने से भारत की प्रगति के बावजूद, उसके पास एक उभरता हुआ और बदसूरत दक्षिणपंथी है जो भारत को एक रूढ़िवादी और पारंपरिक एक-सांस्कृतिक समाज बनाना चाहता है। यह पिछले 62 वर्षों में हासिल की गई हर चीज को सफलतापूर्वक मिटा देता है। कोई क्यों पूछ सकता है? क्योंकि भारतीय अर्थव्यवस्था और समाज उदार, निजीकरण और वैश्विक अर्थव्यवस्था का प्रत्यक्ष लाभार्थी है! या एलपीजी पॉलिसी जैसा कि इसे प्यार से कहा जाता है। एलपीजी नीति का भी एक महत्वपूर्ण नाम है क्योंकि यह आज भी भारतीय घरों में बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि वे एलपीजी (लिक्विफाइड पेट्रोलियम गैस) सिलेंडरों का व्यापक रूप से उपयोग किया जाता है, जो कि कई अन्य देशों में उपयोग किए जाने वाले इलेक्ट्रिक स्टोव के विपरीत होता है।

एलपीजी नीति ने भारतीय बाजारों को बदल दिया और जीडीपी को भी बढ़ा दिया। इस नीति से पहले भारतीय बाजार प्रतिबंधात्मक, स्थिर और अलग-थलग था। यह नीति भारतीय बाजारों को खोलने और प्रत्यक्ष विदेशी निवेश को बढ़ाने में महत्वपूर्ण थी। यही भारत एक आर्थिक महाशक्ति था (श्री 56 और उनके अनुयायी हर पल का उपयोग और दुरुपयोग करते हैं)।
मेरा जन्म 1990 के दशक के मध्य में हुआ है। मैंने अपने पूरे जीवन में एक वैश्विक भारतीय बाजार के सभी लाभों का आनंद लिया है, मैं एक महानगरीय भारतीय शहर में रह सकता हूं, एक वैश्विक कंपनी में काम कर सकता हूं और दुनिया भर के उत्पादों का आनंद ले सकता हूं। इसके विपरीत मेरे माता-पिता, जिनका जन्म 1960 के दशक में हुआ है, एक बहुत ही अलग भारत में रहते थे, जो आर्थिक प्रतिबंधों और अन्य समस्याओं से भरा हुआ था। मेरे पिता मुझे अपने बचपन और 70 और 80 के दशक में 20 के बारे में बताते हैं। अगर उन्हें एक कार चाहिए थी तो उनके पास बहुत सीमित विकल्प थे और उन्हें इसे बुक करना होगा और 5 साल से एक दशक तक इंतजार करना होगा। दूसरी ओर, मेरे पास इसके लिए कई तरह के विकल्प होंगे और कुछ ही हफ्तों में मिल जाएंगे। यह एक मुक्त और खुले बाजार का प्रभाव है।
खुली और मुक्त अर्थव्यवस्था के इन सभी अद्भुत लाभों के बावजूद, नए युग के भारतीय विश्वास और वैश्विक अलगाव, फासीवाद और गोमूत्र को कैंसर के उपचार के रूप में मानते हैं (याद रखें जब मैंने आपको बताया था कि भारत दुनिया की दवा है, फिर से सोचें)। वे निराश, नीच और आत्म विनाशकारी हैं। उनके लिए सोशल मीडिया पर फर्जी फॉरवर्ड को वैश्विक अलगाव, ज़ेनोफोबिया और एक आदमी को मौत के घाट उतारने का आधार माना जाता है।
इस व्यवहार ने पिछले एक दशक में आर्थिक आपदाओं और बुरी नीतियों को जन्म दिया है और ऐसा लगता है कि हम तब तक नहीं रुकेंगे जब तक हम आदिम युग में वापस नहीं जाते या पारंपरिक जाति व्यवस्था के साथ तानाशाही को बदतर नहीं कर देते। यह लिखते हुए मेरे दिल का एक-एक टुकड़ा टूट जाता है। मैं आज भारत हूं, मुझे एक खुला और वैश्विक बाजार चाहिए, मुझे आजादी चाहिए, मुझे लोकतंत्र चाहिए और मैं संप्रभु, धर्मनिरपेक्ष लोकतंत्र में रहना चाहता हूं जो मेरे संविधान के पहले पृष्ठ में लिखा है। हालाँकि ऐसा लगता है कि दूसरा भारत आज और अधिक लिंचिंग, घृणा, आर्थिक आपदाएँ चाहता है और छाती पीटने वाला बटन दबाता रहेगा। शायद वे जीएंगे और सीखेंगे? डरावना सवाल यह है कि क्या कोई जीवित और सीखता है ...
