Yes, surely it can. A woman was killed here in India by her husband for spending too much time on the internet. The 32 year old woman was strangled to death in her sleep by her 35 year old husband. It was the woman's father who discovered the crime first and informed the police.

The police promptly came in and arrested the husband who was sitting besides the body of his wife. It seems that the man committed the crime in the fit of rage. He blamed his wife's addiction for social media as the reason for his actions.
He said that she didn't care for household or the kids and was always with her smartphone browsing and chatting. Neighbors also we're questioned and it was found that the woman indeed spent a lot of time online and the couple fought almost everyday over the issue. The husband also said that he was sick of his wife's careless behaviour towards their children which drove him to send them to a boarding school far away.
Social media is definitely addictive. The man should have got his wife some professional help to deal with the addiction. We should ensure that we regulate the time we spend online rather than repent over it later.
