In this section of BTE 210, we’re going to eat our own dog food. That means we’re going to try out new technologies rather than just reading from the book. If you like that, then this is a great class to be in. I’d like you to put your name, email, phone, major and if you’re qualified for work-study and pass it on for everybody to take roll. Does everybody see what is in the corner? It’s a camera, what kind of camera? Every classroom in Memorial has this. It’s a security camera and it’s called a network IP security camera. IP stands for internet protocol. One of the things that you’ll see in terms of technology and systems is that there are so many acronyms. What does internet protocol mean to you? You get on the internet via Wi-Fi, via browser. That means that this has an IP address. Has everybody been to courses.miami.edu. Beside the name, it has an IP address. This is going to be a location to the internet to say that we have a device with an address. An IP address is a set of numbers and this sometimes includes names that we can recall. If we want to be on the internet, we have that facility. So, we can address this camera via browser. Since this is a security camera, can everybody access it? No, you can have it password protected. What I’m going to do now is go to my gmail. Notice when I go to gmail, what do I see? This isn’t even my gmail account. This person probably left information about themselves, perhaps credit card information and passwords. So, I want to sign out here and use another account.
The first thing you see is Live broadcast since I’ve subscribed to my own channel. What do we see here? You see the live broadcast. We can get participants from anywhere to join this live broadcast. If I go to my account here and I go to YouTube, I can switch my account. You see this creator studio? I’m going to go to Live streaming events. I’m going to do another broadcast through the computers. This is called HangOutsOnAir and I’m able to broadcast this on YouTube. Everything that I do on the computer will be broadcasted. This IP camera has an address and attached to a system here. I’m basically re-purposing the surveillance system. I’m trying to broadcast from these phones and also broadcasting live. You see here where it says screen share? I want to share my entire screen. What does SEO stand for? Search Engine Optimization. If I look at bitcoin predictions, where is it headed? Somebody says that it could hit 100,000 today or tomorrow. If I’m going to sell something, do I want to be at the bottom of a search? Now you can see the broadcast here and the voice is going in and out. Amir is going to help me out this semester and do a project. We’re going to do some predictive analytics. What’s big in finance right now is FinTech, the whole idea that machines can help us do forecasting and advising. So, we’ll be looking at some automated trading systems. Can everybody go to blackboard with me? What do you see on Blackboard for BTE 210? Section KY meets on Wednesday on evenings and I have the same class that means on KX, that means on Monday night. So, which section do you have on your screen? I’m an instructor so mine is different. You want to check the section out. I have BTE 210 KY and BTE 210 AUDIT. I’m going to click on the course itself. The first thing we have is the syllabus. Let’s open it up.
I want you to be able to see if you’re seeing the same thing I am. This has my name, Dr. Sara Rushinek, my telephone and email. The easiest way to get in touch with me is via email. The best times to see me is after class. Today I don’t know what our timing is. We started early so we may end at a different time. After the class ends, I’ll take time to see you. So, the course material we will be using is one textbook. We’ll also be talking about IOT, which means internet of things. Devices are connected to the internet using IP. Some of them are secure, some of them are open. Has anybody ever heard of Alexa or wearable sensors like FitBit or apple watch? Now the whole home can be sensored. Now all my devices can now be internet of things. We have one book here that we’ll be using. If you click on it, it’ll bring you to a site where you can see what’s available. I’m going to then type in VitalSource.com and I’ll go ahead and put in my Miami email and password. Here are my systems here and then I’m going to go to my bookshelf. This is the textbook that we’re using. It’s called Introduction to Information Systems by Rainer and Prince. For this class, you have to get ahold of that book. I suggest getting it the cheapest way you can. Then you can look at the table of contents and you’ll see here that you have introduction to information systems and then you have ethics and privacy, information security. You’ll see that this is a very important are now in the internet of things. So, what is it? Why do we have to deal with security in the internet of things? There’s information people want to protect.
What I expect from you is that you do the reading and I discuss what’s important and what’s difficult. Rather than regurgitating and going through sentence by sentence on what’s happening. We’ll also go through real business problems. Later on, once you know the terms, we’ll get into who cares and how that’ll help you in business. We’re going to go over hardware, software, cloud computing and artificial intelligence. In class, I’ll have guest speakers come in. They may have to do with cryptocurrency and bitcoin or experts in cybersecurity. Also, we may do labs towards the end of class. Think about ethics here, it’s important that people are ethical. My ethics is that you all work in teams and help each other. After the attendance and participation, there’s arriving late, leaving early and coming and going. You are adults and you can let me know. We will be getting peer reviews and working on projects. There is no extra credit assigned. Class participation is important and if there are any disabilities, you can come talk to me and we can discuss it. We have two exams here: a midterm and an exam 2. We’ll be doing group projects and I’ll be giving you assignments and class participation.
Here is my tentative schedule. We’ll start on your team exercises soon. Our first exam is tentative, we’ll do a review before the exam and we’ll see how far we get. It’s more or less on about 4 or 5 chapters. The final exam is during exam week. You can check out on the website when your exam is for this class. A couple weeks beforehand we’ll make sure we’re on the same page. We’ll be doing group projects. We’ll be doing ethics, forecasting, app development. Every week we’re going to be doing some kind of exercise. Any questions on the course syllabus? I’m going to be here and you’re welcome to join me. You have another section, right? The other section is labeled AUDIT. Before we get into AUDIT section, let’s get into course documents for the course. Here you can see tg1, which stands for tech guide. You see there’s tg1, tg2 and so forth and I’ll update the kind of course documents I want. After course documents, there are assignments. Right now, you have no assignments. Notice that mine looks different than yours. There’s the instructor role and the student role. Notice on mine under availability, it says item is not available. So, you can click on the arrow and click on edit the test options. One of the things we need to know with information systems is we have to create systems and check ourselves. We’re going to do this with teams. One of the things we’ll work on is how to be a team. I’m going to be a part of the team. Sometimes I’m going to lead and sometimes we’re going to lead. You’re going to always want to backup what you’ve done. In a couple years, technologies are going to change. But you’ll have a foundation for it. So here it says that I have to make this link available. It says no, so we click on the yes option. And we can change the number of attempts to 2. After submission, you’re going to be able to see your answers. And how do you know that I did it correctly on my side? The student can tell if it’s done correctly. We can check each other because things don’t work all the time with technology. You see on mine, it’s highlighted that there is quiz 1, that’s available for next week. Every week we’ll have quizzes that will be due for the next week. The next thing I have is web links. The web links here can direct you to student resources. This gives me the book. It shows you the student companion site, you can browse by chapter, Tech Guide. Notice we’re going to do Tech Guide 5: Protecting Your information assets. If you want to send emails, you can click on send email.
Now let’s use a program called MSN Recorder. This does what I call screen casting. Screen casting is basically making a recording on what’s my screen and making it into a file so others can see. What’s the advantage to that? People can follow the tasks that you have. Why would somebody want to follow it? You may know something someone else wants to know. Let’s say you want to show someone how to use a software or show somebody how you program. If you found a mistake in the quizzes or something, I want you to document it before you let me know. Have you ever gone “I hear a sound in my car” and you go to the mechanic and it stops making the sound? It would’ve been great if I recorded it. So that’s why I want us to learn how to screen cast. We click the red button on the MSN Recorder Max to start recording. I’m going to select full screen and where it says file name it says, “My video.” So, it’s recording here and you can see the timing here. Then I can go to my other areas and go to other sites I’m looking for. I can then search screen casting programs and it could tell me to check out CamStudio, Screencast-O-Matic, Jing, ScreenFlow, Screenr. Here there’s a list of screen casting software and it gives me availability. If I want to stop recording, we would have to press the stop button. There is the upload option and it allows you to upload to YouTube. All I have to do is put in my username and password and put in tags used for search engine optimization. Now if I say upload, this version doesn’t upload. What I’d like you to do is look for a screen casting program that will upload to YouTube. We can then create a program that will automatically upload clips to YouTube. Then I could automatically show work in the background.
My assignment to you for next week is to find a screen casting program that you can use to document when you have problems. See if you can find one that can upload to YouTube as well. Not only find it, but I want you to do a short clip of how to use the program. Evaluate the program for a couple of minutes. What’s a good idea is to start working in groups. We’re going to start working in groups anyways. There will usually be three people to a group. Each of you should find a different screen casting program and we can all evaluate them. So, we need to find groups and find some ways to share our information. It’s all about collaboration. Do you think there’s companies that work in teams in one location? No way. It’s international. You can work from home, you can work from anywhere. A lot of times, if you want to meet somewhere, you can meet virtually. I also want you to look for programs in which you can work virtually together. One is HangOutsOnAir, one is called TeamViewer, another one is called Zoom. Who’s ever worked in a group? It hasn’t always been great. A lot of the times, we can’t meet physically so we can meet virtually. It’s also good to record meetings in case someone was unable to attend.
Now I’m going to go back to Blackboard and go to the section KY AUDIT. I’m going to go to Course documents and what do you see there? I’m going to click on the tab, Build Content and for my content folder, I’m going to label it Group 0. You don’t do this, just watch what I’m doing. I’m going to put my name and my gmail, and phone. Then I create a folder within and label it Screen Casting Programs. In the text box, I can put in “Evaluated MSNRecorder works with Windows” and I can submit. Within that folder, I can put in my link and my file that I recorded. What I want is for each group to put your names in, your emails and phone number. Everybody has the instructor role here so we can all see each other’s work. After I go back to my course documents and go to Group 0, I can create another content folder and name it “Collaboration Software.” For the description, I can put “Hangouts on Air.” Within that, I can put in the collaboration file. When you upload, make sure to put your name in it as well. I want everybody to introduce themselves to everyone else and to me. Tell me what your major is, your work experience and your background in technology. I suggest that we get into teams, create your folders and at least get all the systems together. Then do the two assignments. You have to find screen casting programs and use some collaboration tools. You can even do your collaboration tools and screen casting together. When you upload it, make comments about the advantages and disadvantages. It’s three people to a group. Before we leave, I want to make sure that everybody has their groups and everyone is on the AUDIT area. When you put in your emails and phone numbers, if your group is having problems, it’s easy to reach out to other groups. Do that now and we’ll think about this as a team. We’ll end early today and I can work with individual groups. What I would do now is investigate the screen casting now and you finish early.
