Recently a woman died in the police station, and identified is herself-piercing neck. See this case details here or here. This reminds me the problem of people died in the police station in Vietnam when they have problems must work with the police.
The cases citizens die in police station in Vietnam quite popular in recent years & and disturbing in public opinion. Many cases are identified by police as suicide, but people doubt this. People are suspicious and even I am suspicious is a reasonable thing.
The reasons are:
- The number of deaths in the police station is very high, but the cause is identified by the police as suicide occupy the majority. Unfortunately there is no published statistics. There is almost no statistics on the number of deaths, the quantity of each cause. Perhaps all of us will be startled when data is released. (Statistically, it is possible but I can not approach it). In 2015 the data will be published once only, through speech at the meeting of the leaders of Vietnam. It indicates that 260 people died when temporarily detained for 3 years from 2011 to 2014. See more the content published at here or here
- The results of the death in VN police station 'secret'. Of course, this is not a regulation, but these results are rarely published widely. At this point, even though there are so many dead but I have never seen a related assessment result.
- Suicide methods were police announced very funny: with a pen, with a belt, with their own clothes or self stabbed many times ....
- There are too few cases due to police error: According to my memory, about 3-4 cases in recent years be brought to trial. I hope there are more and maybe they do not post about the incident. The most recent case was the trial of five police officers in Phan Rang city, Ninh Thuan province, they accused of killing a citizen in custody in September last year. The court sentenced the defendants from three to seven years in prison the use of corporal punishment. See more case.
From 2015 up to now, there are no reports of the number of deaths at the police station. However, there is no evidence to suggest that Vietnamese people do not like suicide in the police station anymore.
