Surfing the net is like swimming in an ocean full of sharks, as hackers are looking for any chance to steal your keys and passwords. Therefore, you must be really careful while surfing the net. Besides obvious things like using strong passwords, only using trustworthy browser plugins, downloading only trusted software and having antivirus on your computer, here are a few tips to remain safe on the internet.
1. Never enter a password on an http site
You must only enter a password on an https site, as https encrypts your password, before sending it out. On the other hand, you can't trust an http site to do so. Popular browsers like Firefox and Google Chrome show a padlock on the address bar, when you enter an https site, as shown below.
2. Only sign up for sites that you trust
All sites require you to register or sign up, before you can use them. But before registering on any site, make sure its trustworty. What if such a website is set up by a hacker to steal your password during the registration process.
3. Bookmark sites that you use often
Phishing attacks are on the rise. Recently, we have even seen scammers trying to trick Steemians by creating websites with very similar names, and very similar front end. A good way to make sure you always enter the correct site is to bookmark it. If you use Google Chrome, you can glance on the right side of your address bar to check if the star is blue, as shown below, which means you have that site bookmarked.
