Four years ago, my husband and I purchased a small farm. Although neither of us had farming experience, we had been contemplating going off grid for quite some time. The kids were grown and on their own, so we decided now was a good time.
The farmhouse is well over 100 years old, and the 10 acres of land was overgrown with broken down barns, fences and pastures. The first four years have been a labor of love, renovating the house and clearing the land. We now have beautiful hay pastures, and a comfortable place to reside.
During the renovation process, old boards and doors were recycled and used in the barn to create a chicken coop, pig pen, and rabbit pen. And one electric fence was reactivated with a solar charger.
We added steer, chickens, pigs and rabbits. We no longer have the steer, but we have a long term plan to raise Red Deer. Lots to do before then, though.
My biggest passion is growing vegetables and canning. This is my 4th garden season, and I have learned what it takes to be organic, while tackling Mother Nature and lots of little pests. I have never blogged before, (so I hope this looks ok when it posts) but I have read countless blogs to find new ways of organic pest control and eradicating plant diseases.
I learned about Steemit from .
I wanted a place to share my triumphs and frustrations, and to receive advice from other gardeners and homesteaders. I look forward to sharing some experiences along the way to becoming off grid, and to get advice on how to grow beautiful pumpkins.
