My name is Mallory and I’m from California. I’m a writer, a historian, and a crypto enthusiast, among many other things.
I found Steemit because of the crypto part of that equation, like many of you. But more importantly, I used to freelance as a contributing writer for a couple of history sites that have since gone down, and I was thrilled to find out that there was a platform where I could post again and be compensated for my work (although it kind of terrifies me to write things that can't be edited or deleted, to be totally honest).
I used to be a graduate student, and I wanted to be a history professor one day, until I took a turn away from academia two years ago to come back home. I specialized in ancient history, and because of that, I can read a variety of ancient languages—Sumerian, Akkadian, Latin, and a little bit of Egyptian. Upon coming home I got myself a day job in the tech industry, which turned into a tech-adjacent job in the media industry, but I never stopped teaching, reading, and writing. After work, I tutor kids and help them apply to college, and I truly love it. I would do it for free if I could.
I like writing about obscure and weird things that happened in history. I’ve written a couple of proper academic articles and endured the pain and rigor of peer review, but I much prefer writing about things that I think are interesting in a way that non-academic readers would find entertaining. I also have many thoughts about crypto that I’m happy to get out there, which is probably more interesting to most of you anyway.
I also have a really cute but absolutely insane black kitten named Mushu.
Nice to meet you all!
