Why Yooper Worms? Why the Upper Peninsula of Michigan?
The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is a tough place, especially the Keweenaw Peninsula. Heck, it's the Snow Capital of the Midwest. We have short growing seasons, and our terrain and soil conditions aren't doing us any favors.
What does this have to do with worms? Think about it - if you have a short growing season and poor soil conditions, you need to do something to boost your production any way you can. Unfortunately, this often leads to gardeners and agricultural producers using artificial, chemical fertilizers. This isn't a sustainable practice. It isn't good for the Earth or people consuming the food produced with these harmful chemicals.
There is another way, and God has put these creatures on this Earth for this very purpose. That's right, worms. Worms are nature's super heroes, and Yooper Worms are Super Worms! Worms aerate and loosen the soil, improving the health of every plant and tree where worms live. Worms leave billions of beneficial microbes in the soil. And they also leave behind literally tons of fertilizer, called worm castings (a fancy name for worm poop).
We aim to inform the Upper Peninsula about the benefits of vermicomposting, which is the process where worms turn raw vegetation and other materials (fruits, vegetables, chemical free paper products, etc.) into usable compost. By sharing our knowledge of vermicomposting, we want to reduce the Upper Peninsula's dependence on harmful chemicals used in gardening and farming. Worm castings are nature's best fertilizer, and you can grow plants, trees, flowers just as big or bigger using them rather than an artificial, chemical fertilizer.
Yooper Worms will be the first company of its kind in the U.P., and our worms will be some of the hardiest having come from one of the toughest places on Earth. We are eager to get everything going here at Yooper Worms and Compost and share the benefits of vermicompost with our community here in the Keweenaw Peninsula! Stay tuned for more updates.
