Back in 1994, Ray and I traveled to Ulaan Bator in outer Mongolia and stayed there for about 3 months. Mongolia was just beginning to open their doors to tourism. We went over there to help build up a church there.
I have lots of Mongolian stories to tell you.
Today many mongolians still stay in these traditional gers. We visited them and are fascinated by their culture and life style.
They don't stay put in one area but move along during the year as the grass takes them. They own lots of sheep so they are nomads moving along the countryside every few months.
I asked them whether it was easy to take down their gers.
It is actually not difficult at all and the whole process takes only a couple of hours. Just 2 hours!
This is truly fascinating.
They show me how the whole thing works.
Inside the gers, the frame looks like this:
As you can see, the entire construction is very simple, so that people can put it up and take it down in a couple of hours. This is truly pilgrim life.
If I move today, I need at least a month to organize my stuff to pack them. My life is cluttered and bogged down with "too many" unnecessary things that I do not want to 'let go'. They become my burdens. They take up a lot of living space. I hardly look at these things and notice them whenever I move. Isn't this strange?
I tell myself: Things that I don't use for the last year, I should throw them away. I should tell myself never to buy similar things again in this coming y ear.
Material things have a way to bog us down and put us in a rut.
The hole in the rut is sometimes too deep for us to climb back up again.
So these Mongolians moving their gers from time to time teach me what is important in life after all.
In this millenial age, it is actually easier to pack up and go because of the internet facilities and we don't even need to move our computers. Everything is in our mobile phone. We can go lite and move on easily.
Move on in your life!
