Are you habitual of eating yogurt or other sources of probiotics regularly? If so then definitely you are compromising your health. Probiotics contain lactobacillus bacteria which ferment sugars in to D-lactic acid.
D-lactic acid is temporarily toxic for brain cells and it may create chances of short memory and lack of concentration in the people having more lactobacilli in their gut.
An experimental study held on Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University shows that people having Short Bowel Syndrome (mal absorption disorder caused by a lack of functional small intestine) were having Overgrowth of lactobacilli in their intestines. Another group with complain of bloating was tested and we were having the same results. We made a third group having brain fogginess and the results indicate overgrowth of lactobacilli. Due to overgrowth of these bacteria the samples from patients were having more D-lactic acid as compare to normal healthy individuals. D lactic acid absorbs through blood and causes damage to brain cells resulting in brain fogginess. For the explanation of bloating we can blame these lactobacilli which ferment sugar and produce gases like hydrogen and methane.
In order to confirm the results we asked the groups of patients to eat antibiotics to decrease the bacterial burden of their intestines and then we examined the symptoms, 70% were showing positive change in their symptoms after having treatment and 85% were those who improved brain fogginess. These results help to conclude that complains of bloating, brain fogginess and short bowel syndrome are caused by Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO).
Probiotics should be taken as drug not as food supplement in order to avoid health related problems. Probiotics are beneficial after having antibiotics to recover the gut bacteria but over use of them may lead to severe health related problems.
