How to begin introductions...be it a novel or RPG manual (both of which I've attempted multiple times) the introduction is almost always the hardest part for me. Generally in a novel I'd like to start with something dramatic, like giving a reader a taste of the middle of a story or even a question that keeps them digging for something more. If this were an RPG manual I was writing maybe I'd go with a short story showcasing how the system would work, like a snippet of a play session I had run before.
But with an introduction about me? There's stories to be had, but none so impressing as the imaginations that an experienced and articulate writer or a skillful artist can master. So I guess I'll just share a few tidbits of information about who I am, why I came here and what I plan to do.
As I said in the introduction: I'm a beginning writer and an avid fan of RPG mechanics. I've been hooked on writing since the first day I started writing a story and found I had a knack for it. The story was compelling enough when my friend first read it that it got me excited. Then that same friend introduced me to a pen and paper RPG game he was participating in. I went in thinking how nerdy or geeky it was and by the end of it I wanted to play so badly that the next session I had a sheet all drawn up and ready to go.
That being said, I've never published a book despite having a rough draft of 100,000 word novel. I've written several custom RPG manuals but I can never decide on a final system. I've never taken anything to full completion Why? I'm a bit of a perfectionist and a little OCD to boot. If things don't fit well I just toss aside.
One of the reasons why I came here was to practice my craft and hopefully gain insight about my writing style. I'd love to hear what things catch an audiences interest or what turns them away. I also wouldn't mind associating with people of like minds. Lastly, I've run into a sort of...low point...in my life. One of the quotes I've heard that I've taken to heart is this: Madness is doing the same thing over and over again expecting the same results. Blogging may be something to help expand myself -- so this is my attempt.
I know in the title I said I'm a beginning writer. This is still true. I'm currently writing a story I've actually came up with while designing an RPG world for one of my many unfinished systems. However, the main thing I plan to talk about is RPG mechanics. I've experimented and toyed with many different systems, some modifications of popular systems and some of my own or my friends mechanics. Instead of letting all that knowledge go to waste why not share what I've collected? Hopefully this will help with a few Game Masters or Players interested in dabbling around with their own systems.
Well. That's the introductions for myself. I hope you found it far more entertaining then me trying to figure out how to add images in my post!
Take care and game on!
