Hi Hive account@triceratops! Welcome to Steemit! I'm new to the community too - and trust me, took me a while to get my photos up as well. What I did was instead of using the 'Editor' to insert an image, I switched the post to 'HTML' - with HTML, you can simply paste/upload your photo from your device, instead of having to upload it unto a 3rd party image site.

Btw, you can tag someone in the community with an alias @ instead of a hashtag :) Hope this helps!
