A little about myself: I'm 30 years old and I've been extremely lucky and blessed to work for a large Japanese video gaming company as Director of Business Development. The job has me travelling about 2-3 weeks per month around Asia, Latin America, and the US. While it's been a dream come true, I'm about to be a first time father to a baby boy in 1 month. My wife is incredibly supportive and told me to continue in my current job, but I really don't want to miss out raising my son due to the amount of travel needed. It won't really be fair to my wife, or son.
My options as I see it are:
- Stay with the job but miss out on raising my baby
- Seek a new job but I'd be leaving a company in which I love the people, products, and corporate vision and have a solid career path
- Ask the company to shift me into a new role, but it will take me off my career path and making less income
For those of you who have been in this type of situation, or if you have some advice, what would you suggest doing, or what did you do when you were faced with family vs. career?
