Firstly what is “Sleep Paralysis”?
Imagine, in the middle of the night, you wake up, but you cant move your body. You are aware of whats going on, and you want to maybe go to the bathroom or just change your sleeping position or want to have a glass of water, but you cant even move, cant ever call anyone. You know that your mind is awake and your body is not. This symptom is called “Sleep Paralysis”
How did I get this?
Well iv been fascinated by horror movies and have watched almost all horror movies one can imagine, from the famous movies like “The Exorcist” to “The Ring”, Some of my favorites being Omen, Insidious, Shining, Evil Dead, etc.
I started taking horror movies too seriously and sometime would watch 2 to 3 movies back to back. I guess around 8 or 9 years back I started experiencing “Sleep Paralysis”, obviously I didn’t know what was happening, was I dreaming or was it real. At first I started ignoring, but when it started happening almost every night and started seeing shadows, it scared the shit out of me. Also it would always happen between 3am to 4am, as I would always check the time when I was normal, and just sit for a while.
I use to think that if I tell anyone about this, all they will do is just laugh at me and call me a sissy. So I never told, and just started researching on “getting addicted to horror movies can invite demons” on google. And many articles said YES, its possible.
Suddenly I started sweating and stopped watching horror movies for maybe a few months. After a while it reduced a lot, but it would still happen once in while.
My Research:
So, I made up my mind and started researching on sleeping disorders and sleeping issues and dreams. Fortunately I came across “Sleep Paralysis”. That’s how I got to the exact word that describes my issue.
After reading for like 5 to 6 hours on it, I wanted to share it to my sister. She was shocked, as she told me she has suffered the same 2 to 3 times. I was like “seriously”..lol. After that I explained here and made her read all the stuff online.
The thing is there are a lot of mixed explanations, by psychiatrist to doctors to sleep researchers to actual ghost demon researchers on it, but yet no one has really found the exact cause.
According to science, these are the causes:
Lack of sleep
Sleep schedule that changes
Mental conditions such as stress or bipolar disorder
Sleeping on the back
Other sleep problems such as narcolepsy or nighttime leg cramps
Use of certain medications, such as those for ADHD
Substance abuse
However i had none of the above issues, maybe i use to watch all the horror movies late night. But im sure its NOT demons either, as i never experienced that either.
As per my personal experiances:
YES it does happen once maybe in 6 months to a year (infact it happened last weekend, which made me write this article)
YES you do sometimes see black shadows, which are ghostly, but now I feel its because you are almost asleep or maybe scared when it happens.
YES it can happen to anyone, infact 4 out of 10 people go through this as per my research.
YES it does happen if you watch too many horror movies, so if you love horror movies like me, watch one in a week to 10days.
NO its not a bad thing and wont affect you mentaly or physically unless maybe you are emotionally weak.
NO its not a “nightmare”, Its for real.
Conclusion:
Well somethings are better to not to research upon and just ignore, as personal experience will deny all the so called research. Yes it did decrease alot after i stopped watching too many horror movies or maybe watching them late night. There is a chance that maybe i use to get too much involved in those horror movies, i still do ;)
Writing this article bought back alot of memories of early experiences and now they just make me laugh at myself..lol
