In the September 2017 issue of The Churchouse Letter, “One Belt, One Road… It’s finally coming”, we made the case that after a multi-year long stuttering start, China’s grand infrastructure-heavy initiative, spanning half-way around the globe from China to Western Europe, was finally under way.
Last week, Britain made its desire to be part of One Belt, One Road (OBOR) clear…
During Prime Minister Theresa May’s recent visit to Beijing, the two countries signed trade deals worth 9.3 billion pounds (US$13.3 billion).
And May’s ambassador to Beijing, Barbara Woodward, has outlined Britain’s hopes of cooperating with OBOR:
"The first is, we'd like to collaborate on practical projects," she said. "The second area where we'd like to collaborate with China is bringing some of our city of London financing experience. Because these projects are big projects, particularly infrastructure, they require complex funding mechanisms."
Last month, China also invited Latin America and Caribbean countries to join OBOR. And representatives from China and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) have signed a broad agreement to expand ties.
So OBOR is quickly expanding around the globe and China is shoring up support.
