Woodland poppy. My neighbor gave me a chunk of these a couple of years ago. Lovely early bloomers.
It's only the middle of February, but here in Atlanta, things are warming up, at least for the moment, and so the flowers are poking their heads up. I just hope they won't get frozen off next week after the 70°F temperatures we've had this week.
In the spring and summer, I spend a lot of time garden gazing - I literally watch the flowers grow! It is calming and fascinating and just generally makes me happy. Every morning I make the rounds with my coffee or tea and notice what has grown or not, what needs to be weeded, what's ready to pick... Over the years, I have bought, traded, adopted, and even pirated different plants in my garden. It's a motley crew - no rhyme or reason, but I love them all. Can't wait for the garden societies to start having their yearly sales. I'm sure I won't be able to resist stuffing a few more beauties in the beds. Most years I encroach a little more on the yard to accommodate new acquisitions.
Woodland phlox. Purple! Need I say more?
Backyard daffodils are already blooming. Notice the photobombing fly! I'll be cutting these lovlies for the kitchen table.
Front yard daffodils - wait till these bloom! They have a gorgeous orange ruffled spiral in the middle. My neighbor down the street gave them to me as a memorial for her husband when he died. They were his favorites and now every house in the street has them. They multiply like crazy and I love them so much! I feel honored that my neighbor entrusted them to me to carry on the memory of her beloved.
Winter roses - a faithful old friend here in the south. I adopted several bags full of these last year from yet another neighbor who was changing up his landscaping. Now that all the beautiful fresh new growth is coming up and the flowers are blooming, I get to admire them and check their progress every time I leave the house.
Day lilies popping up through the leaves. I've got some cleaning up to do... Some of these lilies bloomed twice last year!
Sedum with last year's stems still hanging on. Time to get the clippers out!
Not sure what this is - another neighborly contribution. They will get a couple of feet tall and be fern-like and billowy with white flowers. They have multiplied quite a lot, so I will probably give some of them away or trade them with someone else.
Soon the bachelor's buttons and the bee balm will be coming back, too. I check for them everyday.
What's popping up in your neck of the woods?
