I walked through this area one night 20 years ago looking for a restaurant. It was desolate, drab and decaying with no street lighting and no people.
Fast forward 20 years and it's become the vibrant nightlife hub of the city with dozens of restaurants and bars.
The cobbled streets combined with the bohemian influences of the local art college mean that this is a vibrant area both during the day and during the night.
Belfast in the past was famous for it's hundreds of gable wall murals. Many painted by loyalist and republican paramilitary groups. These were usually of men with guns issuing veiled threats that people found repressive and intimidating.
There are still a few of these older style murals, but they are quickly disappearing. Perhaps I should try to capture the before they go ( let me know what you think in the comments). These new style murals have been popping out in various corners of the Cathedral Quarter and some of them are absolutely fantastic. Banksy hasn't quite made it to Belfast yet, but there are a few artists who look like they could give him a run for his money.
Some of the murals are a political commentary, but it's much more subtle than the old balaclava clad figures with guns. Can you tell what this one is trying to say?
