San Francisco Chinatown, the movie starts with two persons talking each other, one makes the questions, something was happened, like an explosion of green fire, Magic? the questioner asked for a demo to the other man, an Asian, who keep up his hands with the palms looking each other, magic? From the palms come out a burst of energy, electric, which connects the two hands, magic.

San Francisco Chinatown, il film si apre con un colloquio tra due persone, parlano tra loro, uno fa domande, qualcosa era successo, un’esplosione di fuoco verde, magia? Chiede una dimostrazione all’altra persona, un’orientale, che alza le sue mani aperte, coi palmi rivolti tra loro, magia? Dalle mani esce come un raggio elettrico che le collega, magia.

Opening credits begins and here we are, in a night market foggy and full of life, two friends play to an Asian game with other people, they bet cash, making dawn. “Nothing or double, i cut this bottle with a knife!” he’s Wang Chi, owner’s restaurant, to his friend Jack Burton, he drives the Pork-Chop-Express, who agrees. Well Wang Chi strikes the bottle but the bottle slides on the table versus Jack, he takes the bottle “matter of reflex”, happy to get his money(what can i buy, Steem? Steem Power? Steem Dollar?).

This is the beginning of the story who introduce the Big Trouble to the viewer, with the scratchy music also treated by John Carpenter(yes the same director of Iena Plinsky, 1997 Escape from New York), they bring to us deeper and deeper in this wide world full of adventure.

Let’s continue with the story, Jack and Wang leave the market to go to the airport, Wang is anxious to see his girl, Miao Yin, a Chinese girl with the green’s eyes, it’s quite rare.
At the airport they meet her, but before they could get to her, some thugs catch Miao Yin and they run fast out the airport, the two friends try to stop them but with no success, they are able to follow the kidnappers in the alleys of Chinatown, with the vapour coming from manhole covers, but gang is now reunited so the escape is the only solution.

Titoli di apertura e si riprende, con un mercato aperto tutta la notte fumoso e sempre pieno di vita, due amici giocano ad un gioco d’azzardo orientale con altre persone, si scommettono soldi, si fa l’alba. “Il doppio o niente, con questo coltello taglio la bottiglia in due di netto” dice Wang Chi, proprietario di un ristorante, al suo amico Jack Burton del Pork-Chop-Express che accetta. Beh Wang Chi spara il suo colpo ma la bottiglia sguscia via dalla lama schizzando verso il volto di Jack che riesce a prenderla al volo, “questione di riflessi” afferma, contento di prendersi i suoi bei soldini(che mi prendo Steem? Steem Power? Steem Dollar? :) ).

Questo è lo scenario iniziale che introduce lo spettatore al mondo di Grosso Guaio a Chinatown, musiche ruvide curate in parte anche dal regista John Carpenter(sì lo stesso di Iena Plinsky in 1997 Fuga da New York) ci portano sempre più nel profondo di questo mondo.

Continuamo ad avventurarci nella storia, Jack e Wang lasciano il mercato per dirigersi all’aeroporto, Wang potrà finalmente rivedere Miao Yin, una cinese dagli occhi verdi come la Giada, piuttosto rara.
Giungono all’aeroporto e la incontrano, ma non fanno in tempo ad avvicinarsi che la ragazza viene agguantata da dei teppisti cinesi, i due protagonisti provano a fermarli inutilmente, riescono comunque ad inseguirli per le viuzze di Chinatown, con il vapore che esce dai tombini a fare da contorno, ma i balordi si riuniscono ai loro compari e i due amici sono costretti alla fuga.

After we have a big succession of twists and kung fu fights(one of the best fights in cinema’s story, tell me in the comment which scene), the fellows discover the story about Lo Pan, owner of multiple’s companies in Chinatown, not easy to meet on the street, he wants to use Miao Yin to redeem himself from a malediction made by the first Emperor of the China, many years before Christ. The Emperor condemned Lao Pao to live without body eternally, like an apparent existence, spectral.

Successivamente si susseguono colpi di scena e “kung fu”(tra cui una delle migliori “risse” da film mai girate), i due amici scoprono che Lo Pan, proprietario di molte società a Chinatown, ma piuttosto restio a mettersi in mostra, è intenzionato ad utilizzare Miao Yin per riscattarsi da una maledizione ricevuta dal primo imperatore della Cina, roba successa addirittura prima di Cristo, che aveva privato Lo Pan del proprio corpo, condannandolo ad una esistenza apparente, spettrale.

The players don’t surrender and they try rescue the girl, with the help of some fellows, like the great magician Egg Shen and an enemy group of Lo Pan. Between some demons, spells and amazed Westerns, this big pot mixes very well China and America transforming the movie in a Melting Pot between this cultures.

I due amici non ci stanno e tentano in ogni modo di liberarla, con l’aiuto di alcuni compagni, tra cui il mitico stregone Egg Shen ed una banda rivale di Lo Pan. Tra demoni, magie ed occidentali stupefatti, questo calderone mischia Cina ed America trasformando il film in un vero e proprio Melting Pot() tra le due culture.

The background is linear with my preferences, mixing different cultures, martial arts and comedy with a nice direction, the movie flows very well, the first time i’ve seen it i was ten years old, one of my uncles showed to me, wow i was so fascinated, yes i wanted to front of a trouble like this :).
In the period i was acting i met an Italian-American director, he had written some screenplays, six stories like a tv series, horror with a Chinese background. He wanted to film it in Milan, like in Paolo sari’s street (the Chinatown of Milan) and Villapizzone (another block in Milan ). The director talked to me about a big storage with a hall dedicated to the Chinese statue’s, with demons and other creatures, i imagined a scene with less light reflecting just the faces of those statues. In the end we can’t do the series, bet it was nice to dream it.

L’ambientazione del film è molto in linea con i miei gusti, mischiare culture differenti, arti marziali e commedia con una regia che fa scorrere il film senza difficoltà, si lascia vedere, la prima volta che ho l’ho visto avrò avuto circa 10 anni, fu un mio zio a farmelo guardare, ne restai totalmente affascinato, il mio sogno era finire in mezzo ad un guaio del genere:).
Nel periodo in cui ho fatto l’attore incontrai un regista italo/americano, aveva sviluppato le sceneggiature di 6 storie da girare sotto forma di serie TV, genere horror con temi provenienti dalla cultura cinese ed i loro demoni, lo avrebbe voluto girare a Milano, tra le zone di via Paolo Sarpi(l’attuale Chinatown milanese) e Villapizzone(quartiere in zona nord-ovest di Milano). Questo regista mi racconto che proprio a Villa Pizzone era stato accompagnato in un grosso magazzino con una sala dedicata alle statue cinese, erano grandi statue raffiguranti demoni, da come illustrava il posto, mi sono immaginato una scena con poca luce che rifletteva giusto i volti di questi demoni incarogniti. Alla fine non il progetto non potè partire, ma è stato bello anche sognarlo.
