Dioscorea polystachya - Chinese Yam
Quest'oggi vi mostro un altro raccolto autunnale, i bulbilli e tubero della Dioscorea polystachya, una pianta originaria della Cina che offre un'incredibile risorsa alimentare.
Lo Yam è una pianta rampicante con un bellissimo fogliame verde che presenta una leggera eterofilia tra le foglie giovani e quelle mature. Come potete vedere, le prime presentano una struttura cuoriforme, le successive tendono ad allungarsi verso l'apice assumendo una forma più slanciata. Trova quindi posto anche a scopo ornamentale, seppur perda la parte epigea durante l'inverno.
Today I show you another autumn harvest, the bulbils and tuber of the Dioscorea polystachya, a plant native to China that offers an incredible food resource.
The Yam is a climbing plant with a beautiful green foliage that presents a slight heterophilia between the young and mature leaves. As you can see, the first ones have a heart-shaped structure, the following ones tend to stretch towards the apex assuming a more slender shape. It is therefore also suitable for ornamental purposes, although it loses its epigeal part during the winter.
Molto affascinante è il suo metodo di riproduzione tramite bulbilli ascellari delle foglie che si sviluppano durante l'inizio estate maturando poi in autunno.
Non ho trovato molto sulla loro coltivazione ed uso in quanto è tutto rapportato al tubero, proverò a svernarli in frigo e metterli a dimora verso marzo/aprile.
Very fascinating is its method of reproduction through axillary bulbils of the leaves that develop during the early summer and then mature in autumn.
I didn't find much about their cultivation and use as it is all related to the tuber, I will try to winter in the fridge and plant them around March / April.
Date le dimensioni del vaso purtroppo, sia i bulbilli che il tubero non si sono ampiamente sviluppati.
Infatti, quello che vedete è solo un accenno del tubero finale che la pianta può arrivare a fare, oltre 5 kg!
Delle 600 Specie che la Dioscorea ci offre, molte di queste vengono coltivate per uso alimentare, prendendo il nome comune di Igname, riferendosi al tubero dolce (Dioscorea alata e polystachya).
Di tutti gli ignami commestibili, la Dioscorea polystachya è quella che più si adatta ad un clima mite/rigido, sopportando ghiacciate e temperature di anche oltre -15 °C.
Sono piante rustiche, tanto da essere inserite nell'elenco delle specie più pericolose e invasive.
La porzione di tubero secca che vedete, tra le mie dita, è in realtà il tubero vecchio dell'anno scorso che ormai si è prosciugato lasciando posto a quello nuovo.
Given the size of the vase, unfortunately, both the bulbils and the tuber have not developed widely. In fact, what you see is only a hint of the final tuber that the plant can get to make, over 5 kg!
Of the 600 Species that Dioscorea offers us, many of these are cultivated for food use, taking the common name of Igname, referring to the sweet tuber (Dioscorea alata and polystachya).
Of all the edible yams, the Dioscorea polystachya is the one that is most suited to a mild / harsh climate, withstanding icy temperatures of up to -15 °C.
They are rustic plants, so much so that they are included in the list of the most dangerous and invasive species.
The portion of dried tuber that you see, between my fingers, is actually the old tuber of last year that by now has dried up leaving room for the new one.
