Per Beba tra loro va rispettata la completa ineguaglianza. Per Francesca quanto affermano Tony e Beba è qualcosa di disequilibrante, di assai sgradito ed afferma: l'uomo e la donna stanno sullo stesso piano. Se vogliono vivere insieme, armonicamente, devono prestarsi, reciprocamente affetto, stima, aiuto; devono tenere la mente sempre sgombra da qualsiasi velleità di sopraffazione che devasta, irrimediabilmente, lo spazio vitale di ogni convivenza.

Poi il discorso cambia direzione e viene introdotto quello politico per le imminenti elezioni del primo cittadino dimissionario del paese. A tal proposito, Francesca consiglia a Tony di mettersi in lista, di farsi eleggere sindaco essendo figlio del paese e libero da impegni lavorativi. Potrebbe dedicarsi totalmente al bene dei suoi cittadini che lamentano il lassismo e l'inefficienza del sindaco uscente. Ma Tony dice di non essere portato per assolvere impegni cosi' gravosi, anche se prestigiosi.Vuole essere libero e considera sfortunato chi si incammina per questa avventura. Greta prendendo parte al discorso, mette a nudo la sua simpatia incondizionata per le idee di estrema sinistra. Tony ne rimane sorpreso facendo riferimento al ceto sociale della stessa, in netto contrasto con l'esposto credo ideologico. Intanto la cena è pronta e Beba si rivela, come prevedibile, un'ottima cuoca.
Offre gustosi manicaretti, delle carni cotte al punto giusto, e varie insalate tenerissime ed appetitose, prodotto del suo orto. Anche il dessert è eccellente. Alle gratificazioni di Francesca, dice di essersi sempre preoccupata di accontentare il marito che risponde, scherzando, di essere stato preso per la gola. La nota comica, che muove tutti alla risata, viene accettata da Beba con evidente acrimonia. Finita la cena, si spostano su dei divani davanti al camino che viene riempito di altra legna. Il calore che emana e il festoso scoppiettio che si sprigiona dai nuovi ceppi, anima la conversazione durante la quale la coppia descrive, con dovizia di particolari, i posti visitati nell'ultimo viaggio fatto all'inizio dell'anno. Passano in rassegna le fotografie dei castelli della Loira e di tutto ciò che è stato oggetto di ammirazione.
Intanto la pendola segna la mezzanotte e le due donne prendono commiato, ringraziando per la magnifica serata.
A casa Greta esprime parere negativo su Tony che considera un piccolo "ducetto", culturalmente mediocre e afferma che in quella casa l'essere più importante è quel magnifico cane, di colore nero, con focature marroni, dal pelo corto e lucido come seta, il cui garrese gli conferisce un aspetto "snob", eclettico.
