What I present in this opportunity has nothing to do with what I have been presenting lately in my blog, however, is part of the things that I often think, I know that this space, this platform allows me to do it.
I know that much has been said about Bob, and not for nothing his transcendence beyond his physical abandonment of this earthly plane called earth. When I listened carefully to the song, I wasn't sure whether to write from the social, historical, political or artistic, however, I came to the conclusion that the artistic is eternal, and that it always reflects and/or impacts what happens in the social and in turn in the political. So I hope I can make myself understood.
Recently this song has come to me, it made me reflect and I wanted to investigate a little its origin, the reasons that motivated why this cry of rebellion arose, it is still contextualized today, and in what way.
To illustrate a little because, let's see the first lines, with which it begins:
🎼 Get up, get up, defend your rights!
Get up, get up, don't give up the fight! 🎶
This song was written, composed and recorded in 1973 by Bob Marley and Peter Tosh with the Wailers. Apparently it was after they will travel to Haiti, a Caribbean country, (the same as Jamaica and with stories we could say similar), trip in which they were impacted by the degree of misery that existed. And these singers saw some realities that touched him, and that led them to write this song.
Today, throughout Latin America there is a strong political movement that has caused that in many cases, human and civil rights are violated.
We have been able to appreciate how in Chile, there have been strong civil rebellions, the same in Ecuador recently, not to mention Bolivia, which we can say has served as an example of what the strength of a united people can do, no doubt a great example.
All the peoples of the world deserve better, but at the same time they themselves must be the ones to fight for it.
And it is that this reality is not only in South America, zone of the Caribbean or Central America, we have in Europe the case of Catalonia, recently and not for the first time they have tried to achieve their independence from Spain, they claim something that is not arbitrary, but simply belongs to them, their Independence, bearing in mind that 300 years ago they were so, the Spanish crown of that time was forcibly colonized, as was their custom, and now, after 3 centuries simply want something that is theirs, and should not be negotiable, but a right.
Jamaica, for its part, achieved the abolition of slavery in 1834, which was completed with a great revolution, and until August 6, 1964 was called Colony of Jamaica, because it achieved its independence from the United Kingdom, on that date, today is a very important day for residents of that country. However, it continues to struggle and forge its identity as a people, as a nation.
It's a permanent war that the newer countries have for their independence, always against the great Monarchies, powerful countries that want to treat everyone like their backyards.
My country, Venezuela, for its part, is still in a dark trance that I don't know what to call it, with at least 10% of its population (according to unofficial NGO data) scattered throughout different countries, trying to get rid of that yoke that until now has only brought misery.
Then, without a doubt, that letter that shouts "Get up, get up, defend your rights! Get up, get up, don't give up the fight" is as valid as when it was written.
Here the video and the lyrics of the song:
Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up, don't give up the fight!
Preacher man, don't tell me
Heaven is under the earth
I know you don't know
What life is really worth
It's not all that glitters is gold
'Alf the story has never been told
So now you see the light, eh!
Stand up for your rights. Come on!
Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up, don't give up the fight!
Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up, don't give up the fight!
Most people think
Great God will come from the skies
Take away everything
And make everybody feel high
But if you know what life is worth
You will look for yours on earth
And now…
Hoping that the story told 10 or 20 years from now will be much better and hopeful for everyone, not just a few.
