I wasn’t a fan when I first heard Janis. I was very young and her voice sounded so strained and piercing. I just couldn’t relate. As I grew older, I started to really appreciate the pain and intensity in Joplin’s vocals. She sang from loss and heartache with a rawness and passion that was all her own.
