One of the challenges of living in Japan is dealing with the weather and the dust or in our case cat hair, that builds up in the house. Since you have your windows closed and the air conditioners either cooling or heating the place for much of the year the air conditioners get pretty dirty, even the high tech, minus ion ones.
Usually I just pop them open, pull the filters and give them a good cleaning, but recently my wife said she could smell mold in one. So we gave the professionals a call to come by and give it a deep cleaning.
My wife was right, further inside the air con, the places not easy to get to, the professional found the mold. He showed it to us before cleaning it out.
It was interesting watching him set up and work. They use a small jet of water and probably some anti-fungal/bacterial cleaner to hose down the inside of the air con. The whole process took him just over two hours and cost about $100.
Now my wife and kids are happy and world peace is just around the corner! Or, at least household peace.
