It's late Winter here in Sydney, and flowering bulbs are lighting up gardens. Kniphofia ( Red Hot Poker Lily ) is warming up Winter with it's Red, Orange or Yellow flowers. Red Hot Pokers are Native to Africa and are one of the toughest, hard -to-kill plants. Bulbs are available during Winter months at nurseries, or if you know someone who has a few clumps of these plants, ask them if you can dig or divide them and grow your own. Hummingbirds and bees love the flowers as they are rich in sugary nectar. Plant them in Full Sun for best results, preferably in the garden, as the plants grow too big for pots. The sword-shaped leaves grow up to 5 feet long and the plants grow into large clumps. Photos are from a Sydney Garden.
