Kimchee is very big in Korea. As a wedding gift my mother-in-law bought me a Kimchee refrigerator. I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do with it and then two weeks later she sent a ton of kimchee.
Every son-in-law says their mother-in-law makes the best kimchee in the world, but I'm sure my mother-in-law really makes the best kimchee in the world.
The problem is that 20 years ago when I first moved to Korea I really didn't like the taste or smell of kimchee. It was too spicy and tasted sour. It kind of made me sick. It was November 2000 and our kimchee refrigerator was filled to the brim with kimchee. What was I supposed to do?
I woke up in the middle of the night with indigestion and remember a dream of the kimchee monster chasing me. Now twenty years have past and I cannot have a decent meal without kimchee. The meat seems too dry without kimchee and the whole meal boring. What makes or breaks the meal to me is the kimchee.
I had some fun with the names of kimchee and created kimchee characters. As time goes on I will develop their personalities and voices. I would even like to make puppets for each character.
Ma is based on Garlic Kimchee known as Manil Kimchee.
Pa is based on Green onion kimchee known as Pa Kimchee.
Bae Chewy is bast on Baechew Kimchee or Napa cabbage kimchee.
KAK Doogie is based on radish kimchee known as kak-doogie.
Chong KAK is based on Jongkak kimchee or bachelor kimchee.
These characters come together to make the kimchee family. Let me know what you think of these guys.
