한 마을의 촌장이 딸을 잃은 슬픔을 달래기 위해
111그루의 나무를 심기 시작했습니다.

마을 사람들은 그의 슬픔을 함께 공감했고, 애도했습니다.
그러던 중 딸이 태어날 때마다 111그루의 나무를 심자는 의견이 나왔습니다.
마을 사람들 모두 찬성했고, 곧바로 마을의 공동 프로젝트가 되었습니다.

놀라운 건 이 프로젝트가 진행된 곳이
인도 라자스탄주의 작은 마을 피플란트리(Piplantri)라는 점입니다.
인도에서는 여성들의 사회적 지위가 열악한 편입니다.
남자들과 같은 권리를 누리지 못할뿐더러
여성들의 처우도 상당히 열악한 나라 중 하나이기 때문입니다.

그런 사회적 분위기 속에 딸의 탄생을 축하하는
나무 심기 행사는 용기 있는 일이 아닐 수 없습니다.
이 멋진 프로젝트는 6년간 4만여 그루의 나무를 심으며 지속했고,
나무를 심고 가꾸는 과정에서 가족의 유대감은 더욱 커졌다고 합니다.

마을 전체가 푸른 숲이 되었습니다.
그리고 전혀 예상치 못한 수확도 하게 됩니다.
수년간 심어 놓은 나무 중 일부는 과실을 맺었고,
동물의 습격으로부터 마을을 지키려고 심은 알로에는
훌륭한 수입원이 된 것입니다.

한 아버지의 슬픔에서 비롯된 일이 가족의 소중함까지 일깨우며
경제적 어려움마저 극복하게 된 큰 결과를 가져온 것입니다.

To relieve the grief of a town chief who lost his daughter.
We started planting 111 trees.

The villagers shared his sorrow and mourned.
