The Bactrian camel is a large, even-toed ungulate native to the steppes of Central Asia. The Bactrian camel has two humps on its back, in contrast to the single-humped dromedary camel.
As the Khardhungla pass is the only was in and out of Nubra valley , it would be closed during winters due to the harsh conditions . The Bactrain camels were used for trade as they can withstand cold comdititions (up to negative 50°C) .
