Are Cairns Becoming a "Thing"?

Today, Hive account@dmcamera posted about the Latest Tourist Craze In Reykjavik Iceland, noting that "hundreds of cairns have suddenly appeared and multiplied by the day" creating mixed feelings for the locals who, like those in Hive account@dmcamera's native country of Scotland and in other Celtic countries consider cairn building to be an ancient practice used to mark routes of travel. I took these picture on the beach at Ventura, California. I used to see rock balancing around the beach, where rocks were stacked in unbelievable ways that seemed to defy gravity. When I saw these cairns, I just assumed they were elementary rock stacking, but maybe there's more to it. Are any of you finding modern cairns where you live? Have you built one? Why did you build one, or what do you think they signify?
