There are thousands of cargo ships around the U.S. and elsewhere that have been having issues with unloading their goods. Ports in the U.S. have been severely backed up and suffering with significant supply chain issues. To try and help the situation those ports in California recently in Oct started operating around the clock to help ease the backlog of ships but it is still a problem.
Now Biden has a plan to bring fines into the mix thinking that this will sort out the issue. With ports struggling to unload the goods, fining those who don't unload in a reasonable time isn't going to make the situation better. We are already seeing a surge in transportation expenses and with labor issues fueling some of the problem those fines don't address that issue. Doing something productive like changing operation hours to full capacity will though, this is what we saw toilet paper companies do as well when things got difficult for that supply chain problem during the pandemic. Even new toilet paper companies were springing up at the time to try and address the desperate need that there had been at that time.
The Containergeddon Crisis Continues
The backlog has reached an all time high and this means that stores are waiting on those products to come to market, as well as businesses that need certain goods and parts to operate efficiently. Bringing fines into the mix doesn't help the issue but it does make some a lot of money along the way.
