Actually I’m not a Libertarian, I voted for Green Party 3 out of the last 5 major election cycles. I respect a lot of libertarian values because they are consistent. They say the government should get out of most things and they stick by it. There is only one major problem with the libertarian ideology, and that is for better or worse, government is needed. I agree government should be out of a lot of stuff. I’ll start with War, but that is a big issue. Overall though, regulations are needed to prevent private markets from consuming public commons. The areas of environmental stewardship and labor safety/protection/minimum wages are the main examples. The main myth of libertarianism is that the private sector will somehow magically preserve the common good. Things just don’t work like that. If people were more enlightened or had a truly non-corrupt and enlightened government it would be different, but it’s not. Freedom and Liberty are hard won, and it takes constant vigilance, that is the lessen our current generations have forgotten. The world systems of laws and governance are too large simply to be abandoned, and unfortunately the average human craves leaders. It's about having the strength, dignity, and common sense to force change... and the bravery in this risky proposition.
Overall, libertarians unite is a provocative oxymoron. Or is it? Too often we want liberty and freedom, but under our own terms. We have to find commonality in the world, yet ultimately respect and acceptance of our differences. That is the ultimate conundrum that we are far from solving.
